Two recent books on the films of Terrence Malick—Life Above the Clouds: Philosophy in the Films of Terrence Malick and Theology and the Films of Terrence Malick edited by Christopher Barnett and Clark Elliston—have revealed a growing interest in his philosophical and theological themes. Unlike other auteurs, Malick seems committed to an ongoing conversation between God, philosophy, and existence. The panel hopes to explore aesthetic, philosophical, and theological undercurrents in his feature-length films.
Panel Discussion of The Routledge Handbook of Hindu-Christian Relations, edited by M. Bauman and Michelle Voss Roberts.
Unitarian Universalist theology is currently undergoing a renaissance and a reimagining. There are more scholars active in the field than there have been in a generation. Many of them are calling for a re-examination of the core of the tradition, a centering of voices that have been historically marginalized, and a rethinking of the relationship between Unitarian Universalism and liberalism. Meanwhile, books by Unitarian Universalist thinkers are appearing at an almost dizzying rate and making contributions to in a diversity of fields such as Africana religions, feminist ethics, process theology, political theology, thing theory, and womanism. Drawing on this rich material, we will bring together some of the leading thinkers in the field to discuss its future directions, challenges, and opportunities. Participants will include Colin Bossen, Elias Ortega (Meadville Lombard Theological School), and Sharon Welch (Meadville Lombard Theological School). As is our custom, we will have a reception following the conversation.
Meet and greet colleagues working at the vibrant intersection of nature, ecology, and religion at this reception sponsored by the International Society for the Study of Religion, Nature, and Culture. The event features a moderated conversation with scholars from the collective field, in dialogue with a host on a current theme of interest. The conversation is followed by an hour of reception, with cash bar and light reception food. Sponsored by the Forum on Religion and Ecology and ISSRNC.
