A fieldtrip into the mystical traditions of Islam exploring people's search for light at a time of darkness and political tension in post-revolutionary Egypt. The film crew, Muhammad, Amira, and Christian tries to find out how they can film people’s experiences of light and how there can be so much light and darkness in this world and inside themselves. Directed by Christian Suhr, Produced by Hala Lotfy 78 min, Egypt-Denmark, Hassala Films Trailer: https://vimeo.com/680959384 DISCUSSION: We wish to invite for a discussion about the use of the medium of film in the study of religious experience. How can film provide ways of investigating and communicating the sensory, bodily, and emotional dimensions of religious experience that complement written analysis? “Light upon light” was produced between 2014-22 and premiered at CPH:DOX and Cairo IFF in 2022. It is the first film in a planned trilogy with the Cairo-based film collective Hassala Films.
